INTRODUCTION
A space for filmmakers of reality
Miradas Afroindígenas, finds a natural meeting point in the Canary Islands, as does the piece Homage to the Ocean by Canarian artist César Manrique, which makes use of the Atlantic Ocean to establish a dialogue between Africa and the Americas. The festival is a journey through currents of non-fiction cinema born in the Global South that connect organically with the rest of the world.
In this spirit, Miradas AfroIndígenas was conceived as a space for filmmakers from Africa and Latin America, as well as for international productions whose stories take place in these regions. It articulates a unique and original cinematic language rooted in reality, one that opens up the possibility of rewriting narratives.

We program a more inclusive cinema, one that takes intellectual risks and, within the context of the social and political times we are currently in, acts as a space that sows knowledge through non-fiction filmmaking. Miradas AfroIndígenas supports the development of film projects shaped by critical reflection and serves as a meeting point for them, fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange among people from diverse regions of the Global South.
The visual poetics showcased in Miradas AfroIndígenas connect us, thanks to the bold and personal visions of its filmmakers, with the emotional currents of a world in dire need of sanity and trust. A cinema that is both accepting and unruly, mysterious and urgent, beautiful and so very necessary.
FILM PROGRAMMING
the contemporary gaze of non-fiction filmmaking
Non-fiction cinema adopts the subjectivity of its creators. Our festival is looking for the contemporary gaze of non-fiction filmmaking in order to multiply the vantage points from which we take in reality and all its complexity. Those are the films that allow us to ask questions. The kind of cinema we champion is that which appeals to people’s curiosity and sparks their intelligence, an intelligence that is sensitive and empathetic. It encourages us to take an active role and break away from a monolithic and individualizing media narrative. Taking a seat in our festival’s cinema means participating in an act that returns us to the collective, to being curious about our fellow humans, to that which binds us together.
