En Épinal, en el corazón de los Vosgos, los jóvenes soldados se unen al 1er Regimiento. Su banda de música se llama La Nouba, su mascota es Messaoud, el carnero, y su líder es el caïd. A los reclutas, o boudjadis, se les enseñan las tradiciones heredadas de los tiradores norteafricanos que sirvieron en el ejércitocolonial francés. Desde sus comienzos en los cuarteles hasta su partida para las operaciones en África, Elina examina la imagen de Épinal que ellos reviven y los invita a desentrañar la extraña historia del ejército colonial francés que allí se cuenta.
In Épinal, in the heart of the Vosges mountains, young soldiers join the 1st Regiment. Its marching band is called La Nouba, its mascot is Messaoud the ram, and its leader is the caïd. The trainees, or boudjadis, are introduced to the traditions inherited from the North African Tirailleurs who served in the French colonial army. Following their beginnings in the barracks until their departure for operations in Africa, Elina examines the image of Épinal that they revive and invites them to unravel the strange history of France’s colonial army that is told there.
